Pamba River
The Pamba River is one of the most important and sacred rivers of Kerala, India. It is the third-longest river in the state, with a length of about 176 km, and plays a major role in the cultural, spiritual, and ecological life of Kerala.
Origin and Course
The Pamba River originates from the Pulachimalai Hills in the Western Ghats, at an elevation of around 1,650 meters above sea level. Flowing westward, it passes through the districts of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, before finally draining into the Vembanad Lake and the Arabian Sea.

Sabarimala Temple
The Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, is one of the most ancient and revered pilgrimage centers in India. Located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve of Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, the temple stands at an altitude of about 1,260 meters above sea level, surrounded by dense forests of the Western Ghats.
Mythological Origins
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ayyappa is believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini, the female incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The temple’s origin is closely linked to the legend of Mahishi, a demoness who was defeated by Lord Ayyappa to restore peace on earth. After fulfilling his divine mission, Ayyappa chose Sabarimala as his abode and took a vow of Naishtika Brahmacharya (eternal celibacy).
Pathanamthitta District, the thirteenth revenue district of the State of Kerala, was formed with effect from 1 November 1982, with headquarters at Pathanamthitta. Forest covers more than half of the total area of the District. Pathanamthitta District ranks the 7th in area in the State. The district has its borders with Allepey, Kottayam, Kollam and Idukki districts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Nearest town is Thiruvalla (largest town in Pathanamthitta District), located at a distance of 30 km. Thiruvalla railway station is 30 km via Thiruvalla-Kumbazha highway.
